Who will I talk to when I call or chat?
When you call heyHQ you’ll be connected with a trained teen counselor. heyHQ counselors are high school aged volunteers who provide nonjudgmental support to any youth who reaches out. Counselors are supported by program staff, making sure both the caller and the counselor have the support they need. Teen volunteers are available to talk Thursday-Sunday 4pm-7pm.
What is heyHQ?
Starting in 2023, heyHQ is a peer-to-peer support line for Kansas kids 18 and under. We’re a safe space where youth can call and talk about what they’re going through – and find help and hope with kids like you. We get what it’s like to feel overwhelmed or need someone to talk to, so we provide a safe and confidential space to talk with an understanding peer.

Interested in volunteering with heyHQ?
Take the first step and attend one of our heyHQ Info Sessions! At info sessions heyHQ staff will dive into the three main areas of our program: peer support services, community outreach, and volunteer mentorship. We’ll go through training structure and expectations we have of our volunteers, and we spend some time getting to know you and learning about why you’re interested in heyHQ and helping others. Interested volunteers will then fill out an application before being invited to participate in training. Parental consent is required.
A parent or guardian must attend orientation with you. Please note that we ask you to keep your camera on during the info session. If this is a challenge for you in any way, please email heyhq@hqkansas.org to let us know or private message us during the info session.
All volunteering and training are offered in-person and cannot be done virtually. You must be physically present in our Lawrence, KS location to volunteer with us. heyHQ volunteers receive about 60 hours of training before taking calls. Training consists of six in-person training sessions, simulation practice calls, and observation shifts where trainees can see an experienced counselor in action. Volunteers are 14-17 years old.
